Did you know?

The Masai Mara National Reserve is 1500 km². The great migration sees over 1.8 million wildebeests and zebras cross from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. They cover over 2900km with each cycle, looking for fresh grazing land. There are over 450 species of birds in the Masai Mara.

Plan Your Trip

Ready to start planning? Rekero Camp and AjKenyaSafaris.com offer a wide range of activities to choose from during your stay. To begin, you can opt for game drives, which are available in morning, afternoon, or full-day formats. The best times for game drives are early morning and late afternoon, when the weather is superb and the animals are most active. We do game drives in open 4×4 safari jeeps.

Another activity we organize during your stay is a tour of the Maasai village. You can learn about the community in this area as you interact with its members. Do not forget to buy some souvenirs from them, such as Shukas. If you are with your family, the kids can participate in making bows and arrows. For an additional GBP 460 per person, you can take a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara and the Mara Triangle.

Conservation Efforts

Rekero Camp isn’t just about having a fantastic holiday; they’re also committed to protecting the environment you’re visiting. They work closely with the Maasai community to protect the wildlife and habitat of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. By supporting local initiatives and using eco-friendly practices like solar power, they’re minimising their environmental footprint.

The camp partners with Asilia Africa, a leading conservation organisation, to ensure a portion of their revenue goes directly back into conservation. It’s like a direct investment in the future of the Mara! So when you stay at Rekero Camp, you’re not just going on a trip; you’re part of something bigger, helping to preserve this incredible ecosystem for generations to come.

Human-Wildlife Conflict and Anti-Poaching

Rekero Camp conservation effort focuses on anti-poaching and human-widlife conflict. This is to ensure that the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem remains one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth. In terms of human-wildlife conflict, the local Maasai people consider their land and cattle as gifts from God, and thus, there is a need to protect them. For tourism to continue thriving in this area, the local community must also be involved in protecting the reserve and eliminating poaching.

Community – The Maasai People of Masai Mara

One of the benefits the camp has brought to the local community is the employment opportunities it has created. These include staff, chiefs, guides, security people, and other posts. During your stay, you can experience firsthand what the community has to offer through their interactions.

You can also visit local villages and schools to learn about the Maasai way of life and the challenges they face. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn about their rich culture. By engaging with the community, Rekero Camp is creating a positive and sustainable impact, a sense of mutual respect, and collaboration.

About the Maasai People

The Maasai are known for their distinctive red shukas (robes), intricate beadwork, and a jumping dance called ‘adumu’. Their society is patriarchal and centered around cattle, which is a sign of wealth. The Maasai language Maa is part of the Nilo-Saharan family. At ajkenyasafaris.com, we ensure that our guests experience the Maasai culture by organizing a visit to their homestead.

Demerits of Rekero Camp to the Local Community

Masai Mara camps and lodges come with a few demerits to the local community and the Masai Mara Ecosystem at large. These include the marginalization of the local community in decision-making, uneven distribution of resources, and increased pressure on the local resources. These issues are not just specific to this camp, but also to most accommodations in the Masai Mara.
