Location
A riverine forest on the far side of the Mara River surrounds Little Governors Camp. It’s a short boat ride across the Mara River and a short walk through the forest to get here. This puts you right on top of some of the best wildlife locations in the Maasai Mara, with elephants right at your doorstep.
Getting to Little Governors Camp
Getting to Little Governors’ Camp is an adventure in itself. You are ferried across the Mara River by boat and then walk a short distance through the riverine forest. This adds to the excitement, and you might even spot some animal visitors along the way.
For those flying in, the airstrip is close by and a short drive to the camp. The remote location means minimal human noise, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.
Demerits of Little Governors Camp Location
Due to the remote location, there are often restrictions on how you access the camp and the amount of luggage you can bring. To begin, it is easier to take a flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and land at Musiara Airstrip. Local flights have luggage restrictions of up to 15 kg per person, both in hard and soft bags. When you land, you need to take a boat across the Mara River, and then walk for a few minutes before getting to the camp. It can be tiring during this walk if you carry a lot of luggage. The location also secludes you from the central reserve during game drives.
Activities and Experiences at Little Governors Camp
You can go on safaris, game drives, and escorted walks. The camp also offers a hot air balloon safari over the Mara National Reserve, accompanied by a champagne breakfast. Hot air balloon safaris are available near the camp, with a launch pad located just behind it. The cost is approximately £460 per person.
Game Drives at Masai Mara
Game drives are conducted in the early mornings and late afternoons. They often start at 6:00 a.m., before sunrise, and continue until around 9:00 a.m. This is usually the ideal time to head back to the camp for breakfast and mid-day relaxation.
After lunch, you get to enjoy the amenities at the hotel before heading out for an afternoon game drive from around 3 pm to 6 pm. You only get back to the camp after sunset for dinner and a night’s rest.
Hot Air Balloon Rides
For the ultimate experience, the Governors Balloon Company offers hot air balloon safaris. These fly over the Masai Mara National Reserve.
The day starts at dawn, as the balloon rises above the landscape, with breathtaking views of the wildlife and the Mara River winding its way through the ground below. This is an experience you will never forget. After the flight, you will be treated to a champagne breakfast to make it even more special..
Community Engagement
Little Governors Camp is dedicated to promoting eco-tourism in Kenya, fostering engagement with local communities, and supporting conservation efforts in the Maasai Mara. Eco-Tourism Kenya has awarded the camp a GOLD rating for its sustainability and eco-friendliness. Solar power is used at Little Governors’ Camp to power the tent sockets 24/7. Cultural visits to a local Masai village can be arranged for guests.
National Reserve Information
The Masai Mara National Reserve, also known as the Maasai Mara National Park, is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife reserves. Located in southwestern Kenya, it’s known for its incredible biodiversity and the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. It’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise with many species of birds.
One of the most remarkable events in the reserve is the annual wildebeest migration, a natural phenomenon that draws visitors from around the world. The Mara River, which runs through the reserve, is a lifeline for the wildlife and a stunning backdrop for trips. Little Governors’ Camp is situated in the heart of the reserve, so that you will have access to all the wildlife and beauty of the Masai Mara.

Guest Reviews and Testimonials
Visitors love the service at Little Governors Camp, it’s the best!
Felt like home, an exceptional experience.
“Felt like home. From the warmest welcome and the biggest smiles, to the sweet wake-up calls, it was a perfect experience. The staff was exceptional, and the camp is stunning. I enjoyed a massage on my porch with Catherine one afternoon, with elephants looming in the background. MAGIC. The food was divine, and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. They have a fire pit social hour at sunset, and it was a fabulous way to meet others enjoying a safari from all over the world. My sweet tent was simply perfect – and they place a hot water bottle in your bed at night, so you melt right into it. Without a doubt, I will be coming back, and I highly recommend this place. Ask for Jackson for your safari guide! In love with this place.” – Shannon B.
Beyond expectations – the most amazing experience
“Five out of five…. not high enough!! A 1000 stars earned!! This is the most fantastic place—a lovely warm welcome from Isla and Hillary as we crossed the river. Bernard, I loved our boat trip every time. Watching out for those Hippos!
The staff are beyond amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. I cannot start to thank the staff enough; sadly, I can’t remember all their names. You were all out of this world with your kindness; thank you. Everyone was always happy and smiling! When it comes to the food, wow – Chef Fred and the other chefs are genuinely exceptional. I would have taken you home with me!
I will mention Oliver, our game guide. Oliver, you were terrific, truly taking the drives beyond expectations. From the first drive back from the airfield to returning us to the airport at the end of our stay, you showed us so much of your beautiful country! Thank you so much for making our anniversary the most amazing and memorable holiday. I am coming back!!!”- Becks G..
