Birds eye view of Angama Mara

Angama Mara means “to be suspended mid-air” in Swahili, and it truly lives up to its name. Perched on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, it has views that will take your breath away over the Maasai Mara and the plains below, whether you are here to see the Great Migration or just to lounge by the infinity pool with a leisurely lunch.

I have always believed a great safari is a personal one, and Angama Mara gets this. The camp offers a unique and flexible experience, allowing you to design your days as you wish.

Angama Safari Camp Experience

The Angama Safari Camp provides an authentic and unforgettable safari experience. With experienced guides, you can explore the Mara Triangle on a walking safari, allowing you to connect with nature and learn about the local ecosystem. You’ll also have opportunities to learn about Maasai culture and get up close with the wildlife.

The camp’s stunning location on the Oloololo Escarpment provides spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley, making every moment here memorable. You can enjoy year-round wildlife viewing thanks to the abundance of animals in the area. Your safari guide will be key to your experience, making sure everyone, especially children, has a fantastic time.

Because the lodge is located near a section of the National Reserve managed by a non-profit conservancy established by local Maasai communities, there’s a real focus on conservation. This unique partnership helps preserve the ecosystem, making it a special destination for eco-conscious travelers.

The lodge offers a flexible schedule for game drives, allowing you to make the most of your time. This means you have the freedom to create your own safari schedule, which is something I appreciate when traveling.

Angama Mara Activities and Excursions

Angama Mara has plenty to keep you busy. From early morning and night game drives to bush walks, you can choose what suits you.

One of the most rewarding experiences here is visiting the local Maasai villages. These visits offer a unique insight into the Maasai way of life, helping you feel more connected to the land.

The camp’s private airstrip, the Angama Airstrip, makes getting here easy, with flights from Nairobi and other parts of Kenya.

You can also take a guided tour of the Mara Triangle, where you’ll see wildlife and take in the views of the Mara plains. These tours are led by knowledgeable guides who will share their expertise on the local environment.

Angama Mara’s activities are designed to be memorable. Whether it’s a game drive, a walking safari, or a dip in the camp’s pool, you’ll have a great time in the Mara.

How much do you pay for activities & other services?

Conservation

Angama Mara is committed to conservation. The Angama Foundation supports local communities and wildlife conservation initiatives. By staying at the lodge, you are contributing to these projects and helping to preserve the Maasai Mara.

Over 120 of Angama Mara’s staff are from the local communities, which benefits the families directly. The foundation donates £15 per guest per night to local projects, including rhino monitoring and community infrastructure. Through employment and healthcare, the lodge impacts the lives of over 500 people in the local communities. This is at the heart of Angama Mara’s mission.

The foundation also supports educational development by donating equipment to local schools and building classrooms and teacher housing. This helps to improve educational opportunities for the community.

Most of the staff are from the local communities, so the lodge is empowering the local population.

Masai Mara

From early morning and evening game drives to the Mara River crossings during the Great Migration, there’s no shortage of things to see and do at Angama Mara.

For an extra fee, you can also do guided walking safaris and hot air balloon rides, which offer a unique perspective of the park. You’ll love the big pool with stunning views at the lodge.

Dining at Angama Mara is great. You can have a lantern-lit barbecue in the forest, which is a magical and memorable experience. You can also have meals under the trees, which adds to the ambiance. I’ve heard that the food at Angama Mara is consistently good, offering a wide range of international dishes.

The dining experience also includes an open bar, so it’s a fun and delicious journey. And don’t miss the hot air balloon for a bird’s eye view of the park.

Demerits of Angama Mara Location

Angama Mara is located on the Oloololo Escarpment, approximately a 20-minute drive from the central reserve. This means you will spend some time on the road trying to access the game-rich area of the Masai Mara. Being outside the reserve also means it must adhere to the reserve’s strict opening and closing hours.

This can become particularly tiresome if you plan to go for a morning and afternoon game drive, as is typically the case with luxury accommodations. Despite that issue, it is in a great location that offers the best view of the Masai Mara.

Booking Angama Mara

Booking a trip to Angama Mara is simple. The private airstrip, Angama Airstrip, is just a 2-hour flight from Nairobi. You’ll have a range of activities to look forward to, including bush dinners and visits to nearby Maasai villages. I recommend taking the time to experience the local Maasai culture during your stay; it adds so much depth to the experience.

The lodge features a stylish central pavilion with a pool and gym, allowing you to relax in style. The pavilion also has a fitness centre and a gallery of local arts and crafts. You’ll have your own personal ‘butler’ to make your stay extra special. Guests rave about the exceptional service from the staff.

Families will love the spacious family rooms designed for comfort and privacy, making it the perfect choice for those traveling with children. With high expectations, Angama Mara is ready to deliver an adventure like no other.

Guest Reviews of Angama Mara from TripAdvisor

This is what people are saying about the camp:

Amazing views, incredible animal sightings

“Wow. What a stunning location. Perched high on the mountain, the Angama Mara has spectacular views of the Masai Mara. Of the three safaris I did, this one had the most abundance of animals. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest were everywhere. We patiently waited for a leopard and were rewarded with a close-up sighting, as well as lions, their cubs, stunning birds, and surprisingly unfazed rhinos and hippos. The food was great, and the rooms were luxurious, with everything you could need. Thank you, Tommy and the team at Mara. Truly spoiled during my 3-night stay 🙏 “- Danielle G.

“Out of Africa “

“We stayed for 5 nights at Angama Mara, and we were so sad to leave.  Apart from the wonderful wildlife, including predators, the ambiance of the camp was remarkable. Most importantly, the staff here couldn’t have been more attentive. Our butler, Caroline, was a real sweetheart and couldn’t do enough for us. Our guide, Jackson, showed great skill in discovering elusive predators. I am writing this sitting on our elevated balcony looking out across the Masai Mara as the sun sets on our final evening in Kenya .” – Lona L.
