We are situated in a private concession that borders the central reserve, providing you with exclusive access to the best wildlife viewing areas. Getting here is easy with direct flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to our airstrip.
The camp is a beautiful blend of riverine forest and open plains, where the Saparingo River attracts a diverse array of animals. After a big day out, you can relax in our unique rim-flow pool with one of the most spectacular views on earth.
Kichwa Tembo Camp: Accommodation
andBeyond Kichwa Tembo has eight view tents and 26 tents, all designed for comfort and luxury. Each tent features Maasai-inspired interiors, complete with stained cypress wood and tribal decorations. Large windows let in the light and views, keeping you connected to the wild.
Every tent features a private en-suite bathroom with a solar water system, ensuring you always have access to hot water.
Kichwa Tembo Camp: Activities
We offer a wide range of activities to make your safari unforgettable. Our guides conduct two game drives a day and often encounter amazing wildlife within the first few hours of your stay. For a unique perspective, take a hot air balloon for a bird’s eye view of the entire Mara.
We also offer sundowners during your evening game drive, accompanied by drinks and snacks, to toast the day. And for some quiet time, book a massage in our massage tent.
Wildlife and Conservation
We are located in a private concession, offering exclusive wildlife viewing without the crowds. During the migration season, you can see vast herds of wildebeest as far as the eye can see. The Maasai people are an integral part of this experience, and we take pride in employing female Maasai safari guides.
We are committed to conservation and sustainable tourism, ensuring this amazing ecosystem is protected for generations to come.
The Great Migration Experience
When you stay with us at Kichwa Tembo, you have front row seats to one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife shows: the Great Migration. Our camp is situated on the western edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, offering unparalleled access to the seasonal migration path of the wildebeest.
Our experienced guides and trackers will take you on thrilling game drives to get up close and personal with the massive herds of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes. It’s the real Africa.
Tips for booking a migration safari: The Wildebeest migration is a continuous event that unfolds daily, featuring various stages. For the Masai Mara, migration is known for the Mara River Crossing, which occurs between July and August – it is the best part of migration when Nile crocodiles feast. Consider booking your safari early to secure the best spot for catching this event, ideally about 12 months in advance.
Dining and Cuisine
We take great pride in our dining experience, which is a sensory delight. Our open-air restaurant allows you to watch our chefs prepare delicious meals inspired by local flavours, all made with fresh organic ingredients. Many of our ingredients come straight from the camp’s vegetable garden, giving you an authentic farm-to-table experience.
Dining under the stars is a unique and magical experience that combines excellent food with the sounds of the bush.
Honeymoon and Romance
If you’re looking for a romantic escape, our camp is the perfect setting for honeymoons and getaways. With stunning landscapes and an intimate atmosphere, we help you create unforgettable moments. We also welcome families with children of all ages. Our Wildchild at Kichwa Tembo program offers fun activities that connect young adventurers to the wonders of the African bush.
As a bonus, we provide a complimentary pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars for you to use during your stay, enhancing your wildlife viewing experience.
Beyond the Camp
Beyond the camp, you can go on a bush walk or a night drive to see nocturnal animals. You can also visit a Maasai village to learn about their customs and way of life. For the more adventurous, a horseback riding safari is a great way to see the hills. The Kichwa Tembo Airstrip is located right next to us, making arrivals and departures seamless.
Reviews and Testimonials
Guests leave with wonderful memories and great reviews, praising our service, the views from the superior tents, and unique wildlife encounters.
“An experience above the rest! We were fortunate to have a fantastic guide, Peter, who was knowledgeable, patient, and kind. From our room attendant, Sopia, and dining attendant, Ann, everything was perfect. The drives were amazing and beautiful, and we saw the Big Five within the first 24 hours of being there. Peter went above and beyond, making the drives fun, educational, and thrilling.
There is nothing like returning to camp after dark with a herd of elephants on the road home. You are greeted by beautiful, kind people who go above &beyond to make sure you feel like you are at home. The Kenyan people are beautiful, kind, and warm. I was devastated to leave and became choked up as I said goodbye.
The attention to detail and gestures from champagne in our room to flowers on the bed, to a decorated candlelit dinner, have not been matched in our travels. We hope to return to Kichwa Tembo in the future.” – Christina P
“Our cabin was lovely and very chic and comfortable. We did not have a “view cabin,” but we had trees and butterflies galore, and looked out over a deep creek, with little Sykes blue monkeys playing in the trees. Game drives were well-planned and took advantage of notable sightings ( of which there are many).
The bar area was spacious, and Maasai “warriors” would come in on certain evenings to entertain with their chants. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained, offering a stunning view over the plains. Meals are served buffet-style, and the area is not crowded. This camp has, I believe, 34 cabins — spread out and very private from each other.” – KimBocaRaton_Florida.
Why andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Camp
Why choose Kichwa Tembo for your safari? It’s simple: we offer the ultimate luxury tented experience and legendary Kenyan hospitality. With eight superior view tents, you can indulge in the best of comforts while being in the heart of the Maasai Mara.
Our private concession is peaceful and serene, making it the perfect spot to relax after a day of activity. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a fun family vacation, we are the ideal place to experience Africa.
Demerits of Staying at Kichwa Tembo
According to most reviews, Kichwa Tembo has two main problems: its large size and Location. It lacks the intimacy of the more minor camp due to its over 40 tents. That said, its layout offers some privacy to the guests, but still feels like a hotel in peak season.
Its location is also not ideal for any person looking to enjoy game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve. It’s located in a private conservancy. This means you’ll need to pay extra for access to the central reserve and for daily travel to/from the camp. The best thing about this is that you can do a night game drive at the conservancy, which is not offered at the central reserve.
